An amazing day out with our young athletes at the first lower age group YDL
I had the privilege of traveling with the lower age YDL team for their first competition this year. On the day I did not have an official job so I have promoted myself to chief reporter. My report is brief as the photos on the Facebook page speak louder than words.
Last year we were promoted to Premier One, this means we are now in the top division of the YDL and up against the top clubs in the North, which include Sale Harriers, Leeds, Preston, Harrogate and West Cheshire. It is a privilege to compete at this level and is a testament to the strength of our club. The quality of the competition was high and some amazing performances.
We had 51 athletes superbly marshalled by our experienced and dedicated team managers Pam and Joe Green. Along with more officials (both newly qualified and very experienced) than any other club there, and our brilliant coaches and parents who travelled to support the team. There was a real buzz in the air, the host club Leeds were fantastic, very welcoming and organised. This together with a beautiful sunny day lead to many new PBs and an outstanding start to life in the premiere ship.
There was tremendous team spirit with athletes pulling together to cover every event bar 3 (female pole vaulters urgently required please apply). Athletes and coaches watched out for each other and new team members left as friends. We had many graded performances which is really exciting so early in the season. On the day we held our own and finished 4th, just 3 points behind our neighbouring team West Cheshire and 50 points clear of 5th. We have proved that we belong in the Premier League and can compete with the very best. Our second league competition is Sat 19 May @ South Leeds Stadium please keep this date in your diary. Let’s make a big push to finish 3rd in the premiership. Between now and then athletes and coaches need to stay focused. Well done everyone.
