Wirral out in force at the British Cross Challenge Races

Wirral AC were out in force at the British Athletics Cross Challenge Races in Sefton Park at the weekend.  These races are part of a series in which the best in the country compete and present a very exciting spectacle of cross country racing.  The day was cold and windy with hail showers and conditions were wet and muddy underfoot but this did nothing to dampen spirits and a fantastic day of running was had.

The club acted as team managers for the under 11s Wirral School’s Team.  Boys and girls from the Wirral competed against teams from other Merseyside boroughs and both the boy’s and girl’s teams finished in 2nd place winning silver medals!!   First back from the boys was Oberon Kearney who had a fantastic run finishing in 6th place.  The girl’s team was led back by Emma Poulston in 28th place.  Our U13 boys had a very strong showing though most were running for their school teams.  Will sutcliffe (Calday) had a great run in 15th place, closely followed by TJ Jones in 21st and Alex Poulton in 33rd.

Other highlights of the day included Sophie Tarver’s 25th place in the U20 ladies race, representing Loughborough Students.  There was a great men’s turnout.  10 men competed as part of the Liverpool and District League.  Dave Brockway was first back in 171st place with Harley Henshaw (179) and Steve Spence (211) not far behind.  635 men ran and the standard was very high.  Sarah Kearney ran well to finish in 120th place in the ladies race.
